Iowa State University is taking an active role in the search for Jonathan Lacina. They are urging students to post flyers and use social networking sites to raise awareness.

(see previous posts for details about Jon’s disappearance)

While investigators have not found evidence of foul play, ISU is encouraging students to stay safe. In a news release, ISU is making the following suggestions to students:

  • Be aware of your surroundings at all times.
  • Don’t let strangers into your building, including anyone who may try to follow you into a residence hall or apartment. Guests should be hosted at all times.
  • Lock your doors.
  • Identify visitors through the peephole before opening the door.
  • Don’t prop doors open or tamper with locks.
  • Don’t give your access card or key to others. Immediately report lost or stolen access cards or keys.
  • Let trusted friends know your whereabouts and plans.
  • Be aware of where your friends are, especially when leaving group activities.
  • Exercise caution when online, including not posting personal information, whereabouts, travel plans, etc.

This is what I like to see. I hope other Universities follow their example.

I’m an ISU alum and this is not at all surprising what they’re doing. When it comes to something involving safety, they are very thorough usually in at least alerting the public of what to do and doing something about it.

I’m an ISU alum as well. Makes me wonder how long until they install those “call for hell” booths in the campustown area like they have on campus. For those who don’t know what I’m talking about… Iowa State has these units all around campus that look like payphones, but they only have 1 button that calls for help / assistance. I don’t know how successful they have been, but I know of people who have used them when they thought they were being followed or saw something weird on campus.
